Last Thursday, we saw They Might Be Giants perform at The National. We’ve seen TMBG four or five times, but this concert was especially significant because it was on our four-year wedding anniversary!

They Might Be Giants played the entire Flood album – backwards.

Eric knew all of the lyrics. I knew most of them.

The best parts were when they shot millions of pieces of confetti into the crowd.

It was so mesmerizing!

At one point, the confetti was so thick that we couldn’t see the stage until it settled.

There was so much confetti that some pieces even fell into John Linnell’s coffee, and yet he still drank it!

After the band left the stage, the floor trembled from the crowd stomping and clapping until They Might Be Giants came out for an encore.

In fact, they came out for two encores. And still, most of the audience – including us – remained on the floor, waiting for more, when the house lights came back on.

Last Thursday – March 11 – was our wedding anniversary. Eric and I have been married for four years! It was exactly one year ago when I found out that I was pregnant. Two years ago, we were on top of a snowy mountain in Japan. Three years ago, we bought bedroom furniture for our new house and drove it home in the back of my Subaru station wagon. Where will we be next year? I’m hoping it’s in a small town in France with two babies.

On Thursday night, we celebrated our anniversary by going to a They Might Be Giants concert. There was confetti… LOTS of confetti. It was incredible! I’ll post pictures tomorrow. But until then, here are some of my favorite photos of our wedding, four years ago.

We got married at Pocahontas State Park, three miles down a dirt road, in a cozy lodge with hardwood floors, exposed wood beams, and a fireplace.

The weather that day was gorgeous, so we walked through the woods to a creek for some photos.

The photographer told us to pretend that he was a moose.

The Taters played Love Me Tender during the ceremony – just like in Kill Bill – and they played their own music during the reception while everybody danced.

My sister was my maid of honor and Eric’s brother was the best man.

My beautiful cousin, Ashley, was our flower girl.

The guests blew bubbles as we left the reception instead of throwing rice or bird seed or balloons.

After the party, a limousine – my very first ride in one – took us to the airport. We went to Miami and on a cruise in the Caribbean for our honeymoon.

We planned our wedding in less than three months, and it all came together magnificently. My only regret is that it didn’t last longer! While Eric and I rushed to the airport and spent all night on airplanes, our friends and family partied for the rest of the night. Not fair!

When Dash was a newborn, he often slept with his legs in a crouching position and one of his arms extended. Eric called this the Mega Man pose because it resembled the iconic image of the original Mega Man.

Can you see the resemblance?

We’re going to PAX East in a few weeks, and we want to make a Mega Man costume for Dash to wear while we are there. PAX is the Penny Arcade Expo, a gaming convention organized by the two guys that write the Penny Arcade webcomic.

We went to PAX in Seattle two years ago, and it was fantastic. There were workshops, tournaments, concerts, a huge exhibition hall, and tons of games. The best part was that everybody there was so nice. We made a few new friends while waiting in lines, and there were people of all ages in attendance. I have no reservations about taking our baby this year.

For the costume, I’m using a slightly more modern rendering of Mega Man for inspiration.

A. The helmet will be hand made – by me – with fabric and batting. It’s been a while since I’ve sewn anything, so I’ll probably use an existing hat as a base to build off of. The ears will be shaped like donuts with red fabric in the center.

B. The body of the costume will be a plain blue one-piece outfit with long sleeves and long pants. I’m still shopping for a simple, solid color outfit without graphics on it.

C. For the underwear, I will try to find a dark blue onesie, and I will cut off the top and hem the edge. I will likely stitch these bottoms to the light blue pajamas so that there is only one piece of clothing to remove when changing his diaper.

D. On his left hand, he will wear a dark blue glove or mitten.

E. The arm cannon, like the helmet, will be hand made with fabric and batting. It will be made like a puppet, so Dash can stick his arm in one end and flail it around. The details will be simple and stylized – just a strip of yellow fabric down each side and a circle of red fabric in the business end of the gun.

F. I’ll create the appearance of boots by stitching dark blue socks to the feet of the pajamas.

PAX is in two and a half weeks, so I’ll probably be working on the costume this weekend. I’ll be sure to post an update of the result!
